Trail Training

Painted Bar Stables specializes in trail training. Every horse is capable of learning how to ride safely on a trail with some level of competency. We use patience and repetition combined mounted police style training techniques to teach horses how to be calm and confident on a trail ride.

A huge part of our training involves the use of our other experienced horses. By instructing your horse by using show-and-tell and copy-cat behaviors that come naturally to horses, we are able to use the strengths of our own herd to benefit your horse.

Training is done by Erika Eckstrom (owner), Alyssa Anway(instructor and trainer), and Taylor Bowes (trail guide and trainer) usually working as a team or with one taking the lead if a personality match best with a horse.

Our theory on training is that if you teach life skills, the riding skills follow! Our goals are to create well-rounded, sane, confident, balanced, fit, focused and curious horses that look for partnership both under the saddle but also in the barn.

Specialties include:

Trail Training Riding on trail solo as well as in groups in any position, crossing obstacles and interacting in the real world.
Confidence Building Working with low confidence horses to help them be better capable of handling the world and working with humans.
Fitness & Balance Helping horses become more flexible and more fit so that they can be more capable of taking on tasks and adventures.
Mileage & Endurance Training Getting horses out and putting them through their paces!

We typically train horses in western saddles, often in side-pull bridles and finishing with french-link snaffle bits. We believe most horses should try to understand both bit-less and bitted options and be able to ride both English or Western.

While we have availability for training horses, we are, however, full up on permanent boarders at the moment and unable to take any new longterm horses into our barn.

Reviews:

Ricco reached moonlight trail within 2 months under Erika's belt. I had a trainer before Erika said it will take Ricco TWO MORE YEARS to complete trail horse. Forget it, I moved Ricco with Erika for the second opinion now look at them so incredibly!! Ricco is about 75% trail horse in 60 days!
